Virginia “Dale” Keepfer, 72, of Pittsgrove, NJ passed away Wednesday evening, December the 9th, at the Baker House in Vineland, NJ following a brief illness. Dale was born February 21, 1937 in Vineland, NJ and was raised in Pittsgrove where she was a lifelong township resident. Dale was the daughter of Virginia W. Keepfer of Pittsgrove and of the late Thomas A. Keepfer.
Dale graduated from Vineland High School in 1954. She later graduated with honors from Goldey- Beacom College in Wilmington, DE, earning an Associates Degree. After working as a secretary for various law offices, Dale was employed by Columbia Gas System Service Corporation in September, 1970. During her 28 years of service at Columbia, Dale was the Executive Secretary to General Counsel and Executive Secretary to the Senior Vice President of Exploration and Development. In addition, she participated in a wide variety of charitable activities and volunteer projects. Dale was also very active in the city of Vineland. She was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church of Vineland where she was the very first female Finance Chairperson. Dale also sang in the choir, sat on several committees, served as Worship Chairperson and as a Lay Assistant, and was secretary to the Church Council. In addition, Dale was a dynamic member of the Vineland Art Alliance, the Woman’s Club of Vineland, the Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority, and a 50 year member of the Preceptor Beta Sorority where she was currently serving as the corresponding secretary.
Dale treasured being outdoors. In earlier years she enjoyed hiking and skiing in the Pocono’s and canoeing, kayaking, sailing, and ice skating on Willow Grove Lake. Other hobbies included tennis and photography. Dale also was an avid gardener and bird lover and spent numerous hours tending to her flowers, creating a beautiful haven for the multitude of birds and other wildlife that gathered in her yard. Traveling was another joy of Dale’s. She spent time in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France, Holland, and several other countries. She also greatly enjoyed times in Bermuda, Hawaii, and The Grand Cayman’s. Dale traveled extensively throughout the United States as well, most recently participating in a land/sea adventure with family members in Alaska.
Dale is survived by her mother, Virginia (Hall) Keepfer of Pittsgrove, her nieces Doreen Gapinski (John) and Jeannie Gapinski of Pittsgrove, Lisa Hardman (Denny) of Elmer, and Amy Solis (Louis) of Hyde Park, NY as well as several aunts and uncles and an abundance of cousins still residing in the area. Dale’s generous spirit touched numerous lives as well, and she will be sadly and greatly missed by family and a wealth of friends.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 am on January 30, 2010 in the First United Methodist Church of Vineland, 7th & Landis Avenues, Vineland, NJ. Burial was private in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Millville, NJ. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Vineland, 700 East Landis Avenue, Vineland, NJ 08360 or to the Woman’s Club of Vineland, PO Box 61; Vineland, NJ 08360.
